BAIRRADA
Famous for more than a century for the production of sparkling wine, it is only more recently that Bairrada has been recognised for the quality of its still wines. Whether in a classic style, using Portuguese grape varieties, or in a more international style, using French grape varieties on their own or combined with indigenous varieties, Bairrada wines always reflect the place they come from. The moderate Atlantic climate, which develops on gentle hills with clay-limestone soils, is similar to the climate/soil of the world-famous Bordeaux region.
In this region we have a magnificent property that occupies a total of 61 hectares:
Bairrada DOC is one of Portugal’s most emblematic wine regions, located in the centre of Portugal between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mondego River. Known for producing high quality wines, Bairrada is a historically and geographically diverse area with a winemaking tradition dating back to Roman times.
Bairrada is mainly located in the Beira Litoral region, covering parts of the Aveiro and Coimbra districts. The climate is strongly influenced by the proximity of the Atlantic, with mild winters and moderate but humid summers, which provide ideal conditions for growing vines. The region’s soils are predominantly clay-limestone, which gives the local wines a particular minerality.
One of Bairrada’s highlights is the production of sparkling wines, being one of the pioneering regions in Portugal for this style of wine. Bairrada sparkling wines are renowned for their quality and elegance. The grape varieties used include both local and international varieties, such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, resulting in sparkling wines of great finesse and freshness.
Viticulture in Bairrada is deeply rooted in the local culture, with small producers and large farms coexisting and keeping the region’s winemaking tradition alive. Wine festivals and events, such as Feira da Vinha e do Vinho in Anadia, celebrate this heritage and attract oenophiles from all over the world.
