Vertical Tasting “Principal: The Vertical of a Super Portuguese” in Lisbon
On 11 November, Essência do Vinho organised an unforgettable vertical tasting dedicated to the red wines of the Principal brand. ‘Principal: The Vertical of a Super Portuguese’ took place in Lisbon as part of Essência do Vinho’s 25th anniversary, bringing together oenophiles, critics and industry professionals for a journey of aromas and flavours through the wines that are part of the history of this emblematic brand.
Raúl Riba D’Ave, Brand Developer at Fladgate Still & Sparkling Wines, began the vertical tasting with a lecture on the characteristics of Bairrada, the region where Principal wines originate, a historically and geographically diverse area with a winemaking tradition dating back to Roman times.
This was followed by a presentation of Quinta Colinas de São Lourenço, the iconic property of Fladgate Still & Sparkling Wines located in São Lourenço do Bairro, with 61 hectares of high-density vineyards and fabulous limestone soil.
The first wine to be tasted was the Calcário3 do Principal Red 2014, with its firm tannins and great persistence on the palate, giving way to the Principal Grande Reserva 2013, the new launch of the Principal brand, which captivated with its aromas of black fruit and wood spices, fresh acidity and long finish. The tasting ended with the Principal Grande Reserva Red 2008, which showed great evolution in its ageing.
Those who were lucky enough to take part were assured that the Principal brand will continue to delight generations with wines that reflect the best of Portuguese essence and the Bairrada region.
